PSYCHIATRISTS
A Psychiatrist is a doctor specialising in mental health problems. Psychiatrists may work in a private practice or in the public Mental Health Service. A referral is required (usually by GP). In private practice the psychiatrist charges a fee for seeing clients in his/ her rooms. Medicare refunds apply but do not usually cover the whole fee. Inpatient care at private psychiatric facilities is covered by private health insurance and similarly for day hospital programmes.

Psychiatrists can be seen free of charge in government funded clinics (MHS). The GP referral is to given to the Mental Health Team, who discuss the referral and allocate the patient to an appropriate Mental Health Professional. MHS inpatient treatment is free of charge. Generally MHS only see clients seriously disabled by anxiety disorders.
